One of our RAF Section cadets enjoyed an unforgettable week at RAF Little Rissington while attending Week 2 of the Multi-Activity Camp, which took place from 18–23 July.

The national camp offered cadets from across the country an exciting and varied programme of aviation, leadership, sporting and personal-development activities. It also provided an excellent opportunity to meet new people, develop friendships and experience aspects of Royal Air Force life.

Throughout the week, our cadet completed their Blue Space Badge and swimming proficiencies, participated in a range of sporting activities and undertook the Cadet Advocate Course. This course helped them to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to deliver the programme to other cadets in the future.

The aviation programme was a particular highlight. Cadets used motion flight simulators to develop their flying skills and practise formation flying alongside one another. This required concentration, communication and teamwork as they attempted to coordinate their aircraft and maintain formation.

Cadets also visited RAF Brize Norton, the RAF’s largest station and the centre of its air transport and air-to-air refuelling operations. During the visit, they had the opportunity to explore mock-ups of the A400M Atlas, C-17 Globemaster and C-130 Hercules. They also visited the Joint Air Delivery Test and Evaluation Unit, gaining a fascinating insight into military aviation and specialist air-delivery operations.

The most memorable experience of the week was undoubtedly a flight in a Chinook helicopter visiting from RAF Benson. This was an exceptional opportunity and gave the cadets an experience that very few people will ever have.

The busy programme continued with target paintball, where cadets competed to achieve the fastest time, alongside several inter-flight competitions. These included archery and a large scavenger hunt that continued throughout the week, encouraging teamwork, determination and some friendly rivalry between the flights.

After an action-packed week, the camp concluded with a large disco featuring Bongo’s Bingo and a live DJ. It was a fantastic way for everyone to celebrate their achievements and enjoy their final evening together.

Reflecting on the experience, our cadet said:

“For me, this camp has been one of the highlights of my cadet career. The atmosphere and activities on offer all week were absolutely amazing, and I still can’t believe I had the chance to fly in a Chinook.

“I want to thank the staff so much for pulling it off in such a short amount of time. I would highly recommend a national camp to any cadet, as you get to meet so many new people from across the country and make loads of new friends.”

National camps provide cadets with opportunities and experiences that would be difficult to find anywhere else. This was an outstanding week filled with new skills, challenges, friendships and memories that will undoubtedly last for many years.

Congratulations to our cadet for embracing every opportunity and representing Calday Grange Grammar School CCF so positively throughout the camp.
