1–3 May 2026
Over the weekend of 1–3 May 2026, 40 cadets from Calday Grange Grammar School CCF attended a highly successful Live Firing Weekend at Altcar Training Camp, joined by fellow cadets from King’s Leadership Liverpool. The weekend provided an excellent opportunity for cadets to develop and apply their marksmanship skills in a controlled and professional training environment.
Throughout the weekend, cadets took part in live firing on the ranges at 100 and 200 metres, demonstrating strong levels of discipline, focus, and maturity. For many, this was an opportunity to build confidence on the range, while for others it was a chance to refine existing skills and push for higher standards. Across the board, cadets performed exceptionally well, with a number achieving impressive scores, reflecting both their training and commitment.
In addition to time on the ranges, cadets made excellent use of their downtime. With GCSE exams fast approaching, many took the initiative to revise both their academic subjects and cadet knowledge, showing a mature and proactive approach to balancing commitments. Alongside this, there was no shortage of energy and morale, with cadets keeping spirits high through activities such as handstands and light-hearted challenges while waiting for their turn to fire — highlighting the strong camaraderie within the group.
The weekend also provided valuable training time for the Cambrian team, who undertook additional tabbing (loaded marching) training as part of their preparation. Their efforts were supported by high levels of motivation, quite literally, with Eye of the Tiger playing from the support vehicle — helping to drive them forward and maintain momentum during demanding physical activity.
Speaking about the weekend, one Colour Sergeant Cadet said:
“It was a brilliant weekend — being able to get on the ranges and see everyone improving their scores was great. The atmosphere was really positive, and even when we weren’t firing, everyone stayed focused but still had a laugh. It’s definitely helped build confidence across the group.”
Captain Jo McGinn, Contingent 2IC, added:
“This was an outstanding weekend of training. The cadets demonstrated maturity, discipline and a real commitment to improving their skills. It was particularly pleasing to see them balancing their academic revision alongside training, showing the high standards we expect across all areas. They represented the contingent exceptionally well.”
This weekend was not only about technical skills, but also about developing resilience, teamwork, and self-discipline. The conduct and attitude of all cadets involved were exemplary, and they represented the contingent with pride throughout.
A fantastic and productive weekend of training, with cadets continuing to build on their skills and embody the core values of the CCF.
